Dr. Wilfred (Mickye) Johnson


Wilfred M. Johnson has worked and trained youth for over twenty years. Currently Dr. Johnson is employed as an administrator at the University of Northern Iowa.  He directs the Classic Upward Bound Program, which is designed to assist high schools that are from under-representative populations with enrolling and graduating from a college of their choice.  Dr.

Nancy LeMont

Former Assistant Director

During the summer of 2013, the UNI Classic Upward Bound TRiO Program lost one of its own. Nancy LeMont served the program students, parents, staff and the University community for 16 years. Her last position with the program she served as Assistant Director. During her tenure, she worked tirelessly to assist with building the program into what it is today. Her hard work, dedication to the program and students, and kindness are model attributes that will never be forgotten.

Matthew Moore

Assistant Director

My name is Matthew Moore and I am the Assistant Director for the Class Upward Bound Program at the University of Northern Iowa Center for Urban Education.

I assist students from Waterloo East, West, and Expo High School with academic and personal counseling; and with achieving goals set for them at the beginning of the school year. I am also the site supervisor for the after school tutorial program.

Kim Schnell

Secretary II

Kim Schnell has been the secretary for Classic Upward Bound for 4 years. She enjoys working for the Classic Upward Bound program and finds it very challenging. She attended Iowa Central Community College and received her secretarial certificate and later studied and got her real estate sales license.   Kim has worked as a secretary for several years and sold real estate for 17 years.

Natalie Sugira

Former Academic Coordinator

Natalie Sugira came to the UNI Upward Bound program in March of 2014. She came to the United States as a political refugee from Rwanda to escape the genocide that was taking place there. She witnessed the brutal death of her father and lost several family members (including her mother and three siblings) to that genocide. She spoke at the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Rwana memorial at UNI. She was heavily involved in One Iowa and worked for several state and federal agencies prior to coming to the Classic Upward Bound program.
