TRIO Programs
The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to to serve and assist low-income individuals and first-generation college students to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs.
UNI-CUE Programs
The UNI-CUE Tutoring Center provides free tutoring services during the academic year to students in the Cedar Valley in grades K-12. Tutors are undergraduate students from UNI who work in small groups with students to improve reading, English, composition, social sciences, math, and study skills. The UNI-CUE Tutoring Center is specifically designed to provide skill development over the course of several weeks during a semester. Students must register for tutoring each academic year.
UNI-CUE ACT Prep Sessions provides tutoring services to high school juniors and seniors preparing to take or retake the ACT. These prep sessions are free to juniors and seniors from any high school. Students may enroll in more than one subject and may repeat the sessions until they feel comfortable taking the ACT. Both in-person and virtual study sessions are available.
- The UNI-CUE Leadership Academy is a four-week summer program that helps 5th grade students transition to middle school. The Academy is designed to hone the skills of potential young leaders. Students participate in a range of classes, which include reading, writing, math, art, and STEM. Students must be nominated by their 5th grade teachers as having great potential for leadership and academic achievement.
UNI-CUE TRIO PROGRAMS: The UNI-CUE supports a number of programs to assist community members and university students with pursuing and continuing their educational goals, and preparing for careers. UNI-CUE houses federally funded TRIO programs: Educational Talent Search - Waterloo (ETS), Educational Talent Search - Cedar Rapids (ETSCR), Upward Bound (UB), Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS), Student Support Services (SSS), and Student Support Services STEM (SSS STEM). The following section includes a brief description of each program's mission and the link to its program website.
Continuing Education Classes are offered at the UNI-CUE when requested by the University of Northern Iowa, providing easy access to university credit courses.

Educational Talent Search (ETS)
The Educational Talent Search program provides tutorial services, career exploration, information on postsecondary education, exposer to college campuses, information on student financial assistance and more.
Upward Bound (UB)
Upward Bound (UB) is a college preparatory program designed to empower program participants with the academic skills and motivation necessary to be successful in high school and to ultimately complete college.
Student Support Services (SSS)
TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) serves students at the University of Northern Iowa who demonstrate academic need and are first-generation, low-income, or have a verified disability. We create a welcoming environment that supports our students and inspires them to reach their full potential and to be successful in all their academic and personal endeavors through graduation.
Educational Talent Search Cedar Rapids (ETSCR)
Educational Talent Search Cedar Rapids (ETSCR) is a college preparatory program with the goal to encourage participants to graduate from high school and to enroll in college.
Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS)
The Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) program is one of the University of Northern Iowa's TRIO programs and provides academic enrichment, retention services, post-secondary preparation, and a summer residential program to low-income and first-generation students.
Student Support Services STEM (SSS-STEM)
TRIO Student Support Services-STEM (SSS-STEM) serves students at the University of Northern Iowa who demonstrate academic need and are first-generation, low-income, or have a verified disability, and are pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field. We create a welcoming environment that supports our students and inspires them to reach their full potential and to be successful in all their academic and personal endeavors through graduation.
